  VIP Playmate

(Temporarily Mine Series - Book 7)

Someone was incessantly banging on my front door and ringing the doorbell in the wee hours of the morning. I struggled into consciousness and tried to make sense of it. Was the house on fire? I didn’t smell smoke. My foggy mind couldn’t come up with any other reason for what I was hearing.

“What going on?” Mai asked as I sat up on the edge of the bed. She had been asleep, too.

“Don’t know. I’ll see.” I slipped into my robe and slippers and headed down to check.

The door was vibrating visibly from the pounding it was taking. I leaned forward and peeked through the peephole. It was Ted. Karen’s husband. This couldn’t be good.

It had been about a month since Karen’s wanton night with Sally’s bulls. I wondered if Ted had found out about my complicity in that whole thing. Why else would he be banging on my door like a madman in the middle of the night?

I took a deep breath and threw the deadbolt. The banging and ringing stopped. I stepped back as I twisted the door knob, half expecting Ted to ram the door open. When he didn’t, I eased it open, still expecting Ted to come rushing in. But he just stood outside, looking both worried and hopeful.

  “Is she here?” he asked.

  “What?”

  “Karen! Is she here?”

I was confused. “Uh…why would you think Karen would be here?” In fact, Karen often spent the night with me when Ted and Mai both were gone, but never at my house. We always stayed at my man-cave in Halawa. And neither Ted nor Mai knew about that place.

“I dunno,” Ted said. “She ran away and I can’t find her. I’ve looked everywhere else I know, so I thought maybe she had come here?”

  “You could have called.”

  “I did! Nobody answered.”

Of course not. I silenced the phones at night. Hadn’t thought about that.

“What going on?” Mai asked again. I could feel the tips of her fingernails touching the small of my back.

“It’s Ted. He’s looking for Karen.”

  “Why? What wrong?”

“Come on in,” I said to Ted. “Let’s let the neighbors get back to sleep.”

We went into the living room and sat down. Ted explained that he and Karen had been having troubles ever since that night at Sally’s. Earlier in the evening, they had gotten into an argument when she caught him going through her purse.

I could see that. I’d be annoyed if I caught Mai going through my wallet. It’s just a disrespectful invasion of privacy. But I also was smart enough to know that she most likely did it behind my back from time-to-time, so I was judicious about what I kept in it.

“I can see why that would piss her off,” I said. “What made you do that?”

“This. I found this under the driver’s seat in her car.”

Ted fished something from his pocket and held it out to me. It was a garage door remote control. I recognized it immediately as the one I had given Karen for the rollup door at my man-cave in Halawa.

“This is for somebody’s garage door,” Ted said. “I think she’s having an affair, and she has a remote for the guy’s garage. But she wouldn’t tell me who it belongs to. So I was looking in her purse to see if I could find out anything, and she caught me.”

This certainly was awkward. If Ted had known the remote control was for my place, he most likely would have been okay with that. He was aware that Karen and I spent time together when he was gone. But I didn’t want to tell him the remote was mine if Karen hadn’t wanted to tell him. And even more important to me at that moment was that Mai was sitting right next to me. She had no idea my man-cave even existed, and I wanted to keep it that way. In the circumstances, I decided to pretend that I knew nothing about the remote.

“So you say Karen ran away?”

“Yeah. She ripped her purse out of my hands and stormed out the door. Got in her car and took off. That was hours ago.”

“I assume you tried calling her.” I felt stupid for even asking.

“Yeah, but she didn’t answer. Actually…her phone might be broken. I don’t know. When she grabbed her purse from me, her phone went flying out and crashed on the tile floor. She scooped it up and ran out the door, so I didn’t see if it got damaged. But when I call, it goes straight to voicemail.”

In my experience, that most always means the phone is off, for one reason or another. Broken…dead battery…turned off intentionally…

“Well,” I said, “I wouldn’t worry too much. She’s probably just staying with a friend.”

Ted shook his head vigorously. “Nope. I called everyone.” He rattled of a list of names that included Marilyn, the only one of Karen’s friends I knew.

“Maybe she stay in hotel,” Mai said.

Ted shook his head again. “No way. I still have her wallet. She’s got no money or credit cards. She doesn’t even have her driver’s license.”

My first thought was that Karen had gone to my man-cave. It would be perfect for her. No one would find her. She’d be comfortable and safe. She would have plenty of food and drink. She even had some of her clothes there. But as soon as the thought entered my head, I realized it was impossible. Ted had the remote control for the roll-up door, and that was the only way Karen had to get into the place. I’d never given her a key to the side door. Now I was starting to worry about where she was.

But suddenly I was sure I knew, and I was relieved. She surely was with Bill. He’d no doubt be happy to have her stay with him for a while. Even if her phone had gotten broken, all she had to do was drive to his condo and ring the enter phone. I always got a knot of jealousy in my stomach when I thought of her with Bill, but he was a good guy, and she’d be safe and comfortable with him.

But once again, I couldn’t tell Ted. So far as he knew, Karen had seen Bill only the one time at my party. Ted had no idea that Karen and Bill had been lovers since long before then.

I told Ted I was sure Karen was fine and that she’d come home soon. I assured him that I would let him know if I heard anything from her. I clapped him on the shoulder and gave him a bottle of water and suggested that he go home and try to get some sleep.

As someone who had survived some pretty harrowing experiences in her younger days in Vietnam, Mai wasn’t very concerned about the perils Karen was facing by running off in her car for a few hours. She went back to bed and promptly fell asleep. I was confident that Karen was with Bill, so I wasn’t particularly worried about her either, but visions of her in the throes of passion with the black stud kept me awake for quite a while.

  * * * *

The next morning, I forced myself to wait until ten o’clock to try to call Karen and Bill. It was Saturday, and I figured they might be sleeping-in, particularly since they likely had been up late.

I called Karen’s phone first. It went straight to voicemail. Bill’s phone did the same. I was frustrated, but not particularly concerned. I kn
ew from experience that Bill was inclined to turn off their phones when he and Karen were together.

I considered calling his office. I’m not sure why. Just to cover all the bases, I guess. But then I reminded myself that it was Saturday, and as a federal government employee, Bill was exceedingly unlikely to be at work.

I waited about an hour and tried calling their cell phones again. Same result. Both phones went straight to voicemail. I had mental images of them still in the throes of passion. My heart was unhappy, but I got that familiar tingle in my balls. I decided I’d give them a couple more hours before I tried again.

Along about one in the afternoon, I dropped Mai at her girlfriend’s house. She and some of her friends were going to spend the day…and night…in a movie-watching marathon. I never quite understood the movies they watched, but they apparently were some kind of Asian romantic soap operas that went on for hours and hours and hours. Sometimes Mai and her friends would watch them all night long.

With Mai out of my hair until sometime the next day, I decided to head out to my man-cave to fiddle with an old car restoration project I had been working on for a few months. On the way, I called Karen and Bill again. Same result. Straight to voicemail. This time, I left messages for both, asking them to call me.

When my building came into sight, I got a welcome surprise. Karen’s car was parked by the rollup door. So she was there after all. It warmed my heart to know that she had come to “our” place, and I looked forward to spending some time with her.

I pulled up next to her car. She wasn’t in it. I checked her car doors. All locked. I put my hand on the hood. Cold. The car had been there for a while. But where was Karen? She had no way to get into my building, so what had happened to her? Now I was becoming concerned.

I got back into my car and pushed the remote button. The overhead door rolled up, and I pulled inside. As I got out, I spotted a folded piece of paper on the floor just inside the side door. Someone apparently had dropped it through the mail slot.

I picked up the paper and unfolded it. A car key fell to the floor. The paper was a note from Karen. Had a fight with Ted. Broke my phone. I’m fine, but I’m going to stay with our friend for a little while and try to sort things out. Please keep my car until I’m ready to go home. XOXOXO, Karen.

I figured “our friend” had to be Bill, but I wondered why she didn’t name him. Maybe she was being discreet because she thought I might not be alone when I got her note.

And, I wondered why she didn’t just keep her car at Bill’s condo. No place to park it, maybe? His one-bedroom unit probably had only one assigned stall, and if I remembered correctly, his building did not permit overnight guest parking. And Bill already knew about my Halawa man-cave, of course, so Karen would have had no reservations about bringing him here to drop off her car. It all made sense, so I was still pretty sure she was safe with him. I relaxed a bit and tried not to think about what they likely were doing. It was pretty much like trying not to think about the proverbial pink elephant.

I spent the afternoon sorting out the wiring on the old Mercedes I was turning into a Chevy-powered hotrod, but my mind really wasn’t on it. I was becoming troubled that neither Karen nor Bill had returned my calls.

Finally, about 6:30, I got a call…and a shock…from Bill. Karen wasn’t with him. In fact, he wasn’t even on the island. He was on the Mainland attending his daughter’s wedding. His phone had been off because he had forgotten to take the charger and had run down the battery playing games on the airplane. Then he’d been busy with the wedding and reception, so he had just now gotten around to finding a charger and booting up his phone.

Given that it was neither him nor Marilyn, Bill had no idea who “our friend” was. But while I was talking with him, another possibility occurred to me. Maybe Karen was with Thuy. But since Bill knew nothing about Thuy or the bachelor party where Karen had entertained with her, I didn’t mention the possibility to him.

I remembered Karen saying a while back that Thuy had called her about doing another bachelor party together, so I knew they had been in touch recently. And I knew that Thuy had a crush on Karen, so it would make sense that she would invite Karen to stay with her for a while.

Maybe, when Karen couldn’t get into my place and couldn’t find Bill at home, she got in touch with Thuy. Even if Karen’s phone was broken, she had been to the bar where Thuy worked, so she could have gone there to connect with her.

After I ended my conversation with Bill, I called Thuy’s number. Her cell phone rang a few times and went to voice mail. I left a message asking her to call me, but I wasn’t optimistic that she’d return my call anytime soon. Given the loud music in the bar where she worked, it might be hours before she even discovered that I had called. I decided I’d go see her in person.

  * * * *

When I got to the bar, I was greeted by a hostess I didn’t recognize. When I told her I was looking for Thuy, she smiled and said that Thuy wasn’t there, but that she would be happy to take care of me.

She was a very attractive young lady, with almond eyes and light brown hair. I guessed maybe she was half haole and half Vietnamese. I wasn’t particularly interested in playing her game, but since I didn’t seem to have any better options, I decided to have a drink and buy a drink for her and see if I could learn anything about how I might get in touch with Thuy.

But all the young hostess would admit to knowing was that Thuy had taken the night off. If she knew where Thuy was, she wasn’t saying. I thought she probably was hoping to keep me there for a while to squeeze as many drinks out of me as possible.

By the time I’d finished my drink, my new friend had chugged three…probably all tea. I hadn’t gotten any useful information out of her, so I decided to leave before she put the bite on me for another drink. I nudged her with my arm and said, “Excuse me,” trying to get her to move so I could get out of the booth. She didn’t budge. She just rubbed my thigh and told me once again how handsome I was.

I was annoyed that she wouldn’t move, and I had to resist the impulse to give her a shove and dump her on the floor. But, my rational mind chided me. She was just trying to make a living, doing what bar hostesses do. So I decided on another tactic. I slipped my hand between her thighs and slid it up under her short skirt. I wriggled my little finger against the crotch of her panties, expecting that she would jump and move away from me. But she responded by sliding her hand up my thigh and cupping my jewels.

She leaned over and whispered in my ear, “Let’s go to private room. I take good care of you.”

Just then, the bar owner passed by and noticed me. “Hi! Long time no see!”

  I nodded.

  “Where you last night?”

  “Excuse me?”

“Last night. Where you? You girlfriend was here.”

I wondered if she was referring to Thuy. But then she continued.

“You know. The one come here with you last time. Haole girl, big tit.” She cupped her own well-enhanced breasts and jiggled them as if she thought I needed a visual aid.

She had to be talking about Karen. So I had guessed right. Karen had come here looking for Thuy.

  “Yeah…I was busy last night.”

“She very upset, you know. You do something wrong?”

I shook my head. I wasn’t about to try to explain the situation.

“She stay long time. Talk to Thuy until we close and Thuy go home.”

I nodded. “She go home with Thuy?”

The owner shrugged. “Maybe. They leave together.”

“Any idea where Thuy is tonight?”

  “Oh, she off tonight.”

“Yeah, I know that. I’m trying to get in touch with her...see if she knows where the haole woman is. I called Thuy’s phone, but she didn’t answer.”

“Thuy give you her phone number?”

  “Yes.”

  “Let me see.”

I brought up my recent-calls list and showed her my phone. I guess h
aving Thuy’s number gave me some kind of legitimacy.

“Ok. I tell you. Thuy work bachelor party tonight. You come back tomorrow. She be here.”

My stomach lurched. If Thuy was doing a bachelor party tonight, where was Karen? Had she gone to the party, too?

“Thanks,” I said as the owner resumed her rounds. I bumped the young hostess with my shoulder and squeezed her thigh. “Gotta go,” I said. She let go of my boys, and moved to let me out of the booth. I guessed she’d decided I was a lost cause…or maybe she was intimidated by the fact that I knew the owner.

I left the bar and walked up the street to my car. Now what was I going to do? I desperately wanted to find Karen, and I had every reason to think she was with Thuy. But Thuy wasn’t answering my phone calls. So what if I went to her house? Maybe Karen and Thuy were there. If not, I could wait for them to come home.

Just one problem. I didn’t know where Thuy lived. But then I realized that Crystal probably did. They had worked together quite a lot. I gave her a call, wondering if my sugar baby would be home on a Saturday night, or if she’d be out partying somewhere.

She answered on the third ring. She said she was home studying for a big exam on Monday. I explained the situation and asked if she would take a break and show me where Thuy lived. She said she would.

I picked her up, and she directed me to Thuy’s house in Pearl City. Thuy’s car was in the carport, but the other half of the carport was empty, and the house was dark.

“Look like nobody home,” Crystal said as we passed by the house. “Thuy husband car gone.” She paused as if she was considering whether to tell me more. “Thuy like get drunk at bachelor party. More easy for her to do so many guy. But she no like drive drunk. So husband usually drive her to party, and she take taxi home later…or sometime customer bring her home.”

I circled the block and cruised slowly past Thuy’s house again. I could see no signs that anyone was there. Everything was closed up tight, and all the lights were off. So Karen must have gone to the party with Thuy. My stomach churned.
